Day Watch (2006)

[Movie 41 / Day 24]

In the second part of the 'Watch' trilogy, our hero Anton returns and he's still keeping an eye on those Dark Others. The big bad bossman of the Dark Others puts in motion a plan to set Anton up and have him sentenced to death for breaking the truce. Lots of stuff happens, and at the end, we're back where Night Watch started.

I don't know whether they had a better budget for this one, or whether they spent longer polishing the script, but I enjoyed it a lot more than Night Watch - it felt much more complete and less like they were throwing CGI sequences in just because they could. Except the bit where a Mazda RX8 (a rare car in Russia, perhaps?) drives up the side of a building and in through a window. That was ridiculous.

Also, although there's lots of CGI that works well in there, it still suffers from speeding the film up to make it look like the cars are going faster than they are (the first did too, but I forgave that because they only did it with a big truck and it didn't seem so bad). Cars just look unnatural when the film is sped up. Stop it.

Overall, Day Watch is that rare beast, a sequel that's better than the original... And it left me looking forward to the release of the concluding part, Twilight Watch, due this year.

My rating: 6.9 / 10
IMDB rating: 6.2 / 10
Running time: 146 mins
