The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

[Movie 36 / Day 21]

Jet Li is awesome. Jackie Chan is awesome. A movie starring both for the first time? That should be DOUBLE WICKED AWESOME!

It's not.

It's OK, and it's tremendous fun watching Chan and Li going at it, even though it's a veritable CGI and wire fest... The problem is the movie is a bit all-over-the-place. It's a simple enough plot, it's just not very well done. There are continuity errors galore and it detracts from your enjoyment because it's so noticable. One second they're on horses, riding through a bamboo forest, the next they're on foot walking through the desert - with no explanation or sense of any time passing (apart from the American guy, who is a bit gormless looking, suddenly has a ponytail). Still in the desert, they walk under these massive stones. The next shot, they're in a valley with no humungous stones to be seen. Also, the accents are a bit impenetrable at times.

It could have been so much better. Still, it's about 1,000 times better than Hero, which bored the crap out of me ("but it's ART, not a movie").

My rating: 6.1 / 10
IMDB rating: 6.9 / 10
Running time: 113 mins
