The Hitcher (1986)

[Movie 27 / Day 13]

A kid picks up a murderous hitch-hiker, but manages to escape his clutches. So the hitcher frames the kid for a string of killings and taunts him, playing cat and mouse.

It's dated pretty badly, it's not as suspenseful as some reviews would make you think, and for some reason the UK DVD is rated 18 - there's a couple of swear words, a severed finger and a gun shot wound. I'm not sure why it warranted an 18.

I'd say it's neither as scary nor as thrilling as Duel (which has similarities in both tone and plot). Although made for TV, Duel manages to keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. This was more comedy.

I would say Rutger Hauer is pretty good in this, better than in Blade Runner, not quite as good as in the Guinness commercials he did.

My rating: 5.6 / 10
IMDB rating: 7.2 / 10
Running time: 97 mins
